Patterns, scenes, symbols

There are 70 patterns in 15 styles, from stripes, dots and checks to Japanese, retro, textile and night-sky designs. Each one is drawn in whichever palette you choose, and starts in the palette of the vibe on your desktop.

With Pro, a folder can also be cut from any of the scenes, or from the current vibe so it matches your desktop exactly. You can use an image of your own too.

On top of any design, press one of 50 symbols into the front, grouped into work, making, life and things, so a folder is easy to spot at a glance.

Changing and resetting

Drop folders from Finder onto the Folder Icons pane, or choose them in an open panel, and the design is applied to all of them. MacScapes keeps a list with a thumbnail of each, so you can show any folder in Finder, give it the current design, or reset it to the standard icon. Reset All does every folder at once.

Icons are written into the folder the way Finder writes one you paste in Get Info. They stay after MacScapes is gone, so reset any you don’t want to keep before you delete the app.

When Finder holds on to the old icon

Replace one custom icon with another and Finder often keeps showing the old one, most reliably on an iCloud-synced Desktop. In our testing, Finder only redraws after it has seen the folder with no custom icon at all.

So when a folder already has a custom icon, MacScapes clears it first, waits a moment, and then applies the new one. The icon you see is the icon you chose.

Questions

Are the icons stored in my folders?

Yes, the same way Finder stores an icon you paste in Get Info: as a hidden file inside the folder. That's why they stay put after you quit MacScapes, and after you delete it, until you reset them.

How do I put the standard icon back?

MacScapes keeps a list of every folder it changed. Reset one folder from the list, or reset them all at once. Only the icon changes; the folders and what's in them are left alone.

Which designs are free?

Eight patterns, Classic, Fade, Pinstripe, Polka, Gingham, Scallops, Graph paper and Stars, in any free palette and with any of the 50 symbols. Pro adds the rest of the patterns, the scene designs and your own images. You can preview any design before deciding.

Can MacScapes see my files?

Only the folders you hand it, by dropping them on the window or choosing them in the open panel. MacScapes is sandboxed: it changes the folder's icon and nothing inside it, and remembers each folder only so it can reset the icon later.
