Backdrop alternative for Mac: MacScapes vs Backdrop

If you’re looking for a Backdrop alternative, try MacScapes. Its scenes are drawn live instead of played from video, the widgets, folder icons and sound match the wallpaper, the free version has no time limit or watermark, and Pro costs less: $12.99 a year against $14.99, or $19.99 for life against $29.99. Backdrop is still the pick for filmed footage and a moving Lock Screen.

Why look for a Backdrop alternative?

Backdrop is a polished video wallpaper app. These are the differences that send people looking elsewhere:

  • It’s video only. Version 2.2.0 (November 2025) removed support for animated Rive backdrops, so every backdrop is now a recorded clip: it loops, its colors are fixed, and each one is a file on your disk.
  • Nothing else on the desktop matches. There are no widgets, folder icons or sounds to go with the wallpaper.
  • It needs macOS 15. Macs still on macOS 14 Sonoma can’t run the current version.
  • The free trial adds a watermark to anything past three backdrops, and the lifetime license is $29.99.
  • It reaches more of your Mac. It isn’t on the Mac App Store or in the App Sandbox, and it carries third-party analytics.

Where MacScapes is ahead

  • Scenes that aren’t recordings. Each of the 42 scenes is a small program your Mac draws frame by frame, so any of the 48 palettes can recolor it, and its speed and detail change as you watch. See every scene.
  • The rest of the desktop. Widgets that take their colors from the wallpaper, folder icons in the same palette, and ten ambient sounds.
  • A desktop that follows your day. Schedules switch the whole look at a set time, at sunrise or at sunset. Backdrop has playlists with schedules, but doesn’t document sunrise or sunset.
  • Disk space. MacScapes is about 35 MB with every scene included. Backdrop is 99 MB before you download a single video.
  • Price and reach. A free version with no time limit, lower yearly and lifetime prices, and macOS 14 rather than 15.

Where Backdrop is ahead

Footage and the Lock Screen. Backdrop’s community library has thousands of filmed and animated wallpapers, its Creator turns your own clips into backdrops, and since version 2.0 it plays video on the Lock Screen too. MacScapes has no video library and puts a still of the scene on the Lock Screen. Backdrop is also available in more than 20 languages.

Battery

Both apps hold back on battery. Backdrop 2.8.0 added an optional pause on battery or in Low Power Mode. MacScapes drops to 30 frames per second at half resolution whenever you’re unplugged or in Low Power Mode, stops drawing when windows cover the desktop, and can switch to a lighter vibe until you plug back in. Our battery guide explains what a live wallpaper costs on a MacBook.
