Wallper alternative for Mac: MacScapes vs Wallper

The best Wallper alternative for most people is MacScapes. Wallper locks after a 7-day trial; MacScapes has a free version that keeps working. Its 42 scenes are drawn live in any of 48 palettes rather than played from 4K video, and the widgets, folder icons and sound match the wallpaper. Wallper is still the pick for real footage and a moving Lock Screen.

Why look for a Wallper alternative?

  • The trial ends. After 7 days Wallper locks until you buy. There’s no free version to fall back to.
  • It’s a video library. Every wallpaper is a clip with fixed colors, and the ones you keep take up disk space.
  • The rest of the desktop doesn’t change. Wallper’s pages don’t mention widgets or folder icons.
  • It reaches more of your Mac. Wallper says it can’t be on the Mac App Store because it uses system-level features the store doesn’t allow, and the download we opened isn’t sandboxed.

Where MacScapes is ahead

  • A free version. 7 scenes, 11 palettes, the clock, date and day widgets, and two schedule rules, with no time limit and no watermark.
  • Scenes drawn live. The 42 scenes aren’t recordings, so any palette can recolor them, from soft paper tones to neon, and you can change their speed and detail. See every scene.
  • The whole desktop. Widgets, folder icons and ambient sound that match the wallpaper, saved together as vibes that change with your day.
  • Privacy. MacScapes runs in the App Sandbox, the same protection Mac App Store apps use. The only service it contacts is Open-Meteo, for the weather widget.

Where Wallper is ahead

Footage, the Lock Screen and the extras. Wallper has about 2,900 wallpapers in 4K, a Studio for making your own, and on macOS 26 its wallpapers keep moving on the Lock Screen and as a screen saver. It syncs with music from Spotify and Apple Music, and with Philips Hue and WLED lights. MacScapes has none of those. And to own it outright, Wallper costs less: $14.99 for three Macs against $19.99 for MacScapes Pro.

Schedules and battery

Both apps follow the day. Wallper 1.12.0 (September 2026) added playlists for day and night, light and dark, or set times, and day and night can follow sunrise and sunset. MacScapes schedules switch the whole vibe at a time, at sunrise or at sunset.

On battery, Wallper lets you keep playing, pause when the battery is low, or pause whenever you’re unplugged. MacScapes drops to 30 frames per second at half resolution when you unplug or turn on Low Power Mode, stops drawing when windows cover the desktop, and can switch to a battery vibe. Our battery guide explains what a live wallpaper costs on a MacBook.
