Koi, whales and a sleeping cat

Seen from above, koi glide on slow, looping paths through a still pond, tails beating and bodies curving into each turn. Sunlight dapples the floor, lily pads float over the fish and now and then a ring spreads across the surface. Fish sets how many swim, from three to nine; Lily pads adds up to seven.

Pulsing every few seconds, moon jellies climb through dark water: a quick contraction, a slow relax and a small step upward each time. Light reaches down in shafts from the surface and marine snow drifts past. Jellies sets how many, from three to eight, and Glow how brightly their bells shine.

Thousands of starlings fold and unfold across a dusk sky as one shape, over a lake that mirrors the sunset and a bed of reeds leaning in the wind. The flock loops slowly over the water as it turns. Flock size sets how much sky it covers, and Turbulence how restlessly it churns.

Evening Flight

About every 75 seconds, a humpback crosses below the surface through shafts of light and drifting particles, each time at a new depth and from one side or the other. Its flukes rise and fall with each stroke. Light rays sets how strong the shafts are, and Particles how many motes float by.

Midnight

Small fish wheel through open water in a tight school, flashing silver as they turn, then lap back behind, smaller and hazier, before coming round again. A second school moves far off and the seabed just shows below. Fish fills out the schools, and Light rays strengthens the shafts from above.

On a wet evening, a cat sleeps on the windowsill, its flank rising and falling, an ear or the tip of its tail stirring now and then. Outside, rain blurs the lit windows and street lights, and drops bead and run down the glass. Rain sets how hard it falls, and Lights how many are on.

Two skeins of geese in loose V shapes cross an evening sky, one near and one far, each pass taking about a minute and a half from one side or the other. Below, four ridges fold away into the haze. Geese sets how many fly in each skein, and Haze pools mist in the valleys.
